Thalle La Trek
The expansive and verdant Thalle Lungma stretches in a north-western direction from the Shyok River, positioned 15km west of Khaplu and 85km east of Skardu. At the upper valley, a division occurs, with the northern branch leading over the infrequently traversed Tusserpo La (5084m), while the southern branch crosses the relatively easier Thalle La (4572m). Both passes converge onto the Bauma Lungma, which proceeds in a south-western direction towards Shigar. Historically, the British, utilizing this route from 1891 to 1947, favored the Thalle La between Skardu and Khaplu due to the availability of grazing grounds for their pack animals.
The Thalle La, characterized as one of the few non-glaciated passes in Baltistan and considered one of the region’s simpler routes, is well-suited for backpacking. It can be traversed in either direction, and access to the Shigar trailhead from Skardu is convenient. As many trekkers use the Thalle La for a return trek from Hushe or Khaplu, the following description is oriented from east to west. During the early part of the season, substantial snowfall is anticipated on Thalle La’s east side, with even more on Tusserpo La.
